Chinese Government Scholarships for Papua New Guinea students
The Papua New Guinea Department of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology (DHERST), in partnership with the Government of the People’s Republic of China, is pleased to announce the 2026 Chinese Government Scholarships. These scholarships, offered under the Memorandum of Understanding on Higher Education Cooperation, provide opportunities for eligible Papua New Guineans to pursue Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral programs in China for the 2025/2026 academic year.
Eligibility Requirements
For Master’s and Doctoral Applicants:
- Must be a PNG citizen in good health.
- Age limit: 35 years for Master’s and 40 years for Doctoral programs.
- Must hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher qualification.
- Must provide a release letter from an employer (if currently employed).
For Bachelor’s Applicants:
- Must be a PNG citizen in good health.
- Age limit: 25 years.
- Must hold a Grade 12 Higher School Certificate with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Application Requirements
Applicants must submit certified copies of the following:
- Printed online application form for Chinese Government Scholarships.
- Valid passport bio page (expiry after March 1, 2026).
- Relevant educational certificates and transcripts (notarized).
- Pre-admission documents from the intended university in China.
- Study Plan/Research Proposal:
- Bachelor’s applicants: Minimum 200 words.
- Master’s/Doctoral applicants: Minimum 800 words.
- Two recommendation letters from professors/associate professors (for Master’s/Doctoral).
- Completed Foreigner Physical Examination Form.
- Recent police clearance (issued within six months).
- Language proficiency certificates (HSK, IELTS, or TOEFL).
- Legal guardianship documents (for applicants under 18).
- Character reference letter from a parish priest/pastor/church elder.
- Birth certificate, NID card, or driver’s license.
Priority Fields of Study
Applicants are advised to apply for programs in sciences, technology, agriculture, medicine, economics, management, education, history, liberal arts, and philosophy. Applications for non-priority fields will not be considered.

- Register an account and select "Type A" under Program Category. Use Agency Number 5981 for DHERST.

Submission Details
Completed applications, including all required documents, must be submitted to:

Note: Applications must be submitted both online and as two hard copies. Faxed or emailed applications will not be accepted.
Important Notes
Bachelor’s programs are conducted in full Chinese language.
The scholarship package does not include travel expenses.
Pre-admission notices from universities must be secured before submitting the online application.
Unsuccessful applicants will not be notified.
