 Senior Engineer – Civil – Road Works (1489)

Position Objective

Ensure the technical, design and engineering requirements are met for community development-related road works and civil projects, to supervise and coordinate the activities of the road works crew and assist Porgera Operations in achieving effective community relations.




Duties and responsibilities:

  • In consultation with the Capital Projects Manager, establish priorities for Civil and Roadworks projects
  • Develop shorter-focus plans for the Civil Projects team to assist in allocation of responsibilities and cascading plans
  • Evaluate the communities’ project ideas in terms of feasibility and assist in the development of project proposals
  • Maintain statutory & technical design compliance for all Civil project work, PJV policy for sustainability, Government requirements and TCS guidelines
  • Assist with the preparation of project estimates and submissions for approval
  • Write up professional services briefs, engage and supervise surveyors, architects and engineering consultants in the preparation of project designs, drawings and contract documentation
  • Prepare scopes of works, labour and materials schedules and contract documentation for projects undertaken by either labour only contracts or community groups, in liaison with Business Development team
  • Tender and administer contracts for the construction of new Civil projects
  • Procure equipment and materials for projects
  • Ensure a customer focus is maintained and check for customer feedback regularly
  • Establish controls to ensure all design and construction data is accurately captured and recorded during the course of modifications and installations
  • Establish controls to capture lessons from design and construction work to ensure knowledge retention for Porgera and Barrick in relation to structural integrity, maintenance and future projects
  • Manage Contractors in the performance of agreed works and ensure Contractor meets all contractual terms including safety, health and environment responsibilities relating to their employees
  • Maintain a high level of health, safety and environmental awareness and comply with the PJV Occupational Health, Safety and Environment Policy and Rules and Procedures

The ideal candidate must have:

  • Recognised tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering and construction management or related field
  • Experience in project management, planning & programming projects and resources
  • Experience in the preparation of project estimates, budgets and expenditure controls
  • Ability to evaluate the feasibility and suitability of projects
  • Ability to manage multi disciple staff operating over large remote areas
  • Experience in design, cost estimating, scheduling, reporting and budgeting
  • Experience in Contract Administration and Management
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team safely and improve team safety awareness
  • Computer Assisted drafting software, cost estimation software and materials management system
  • MS Office Suites _database, PowerPoint, Word, Excel and MS Project applications
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels
